Able Bodied Feminism Is…

proletariangothic:

Thinking “nobody should be forced to carry a disabled child to term” is a good argument for abortion rights.

Not realizing that widespread forced sterilization of disabled women is still happening.

Upping Margaret Sanger despite her being a racist and a supporter of Eugenics.

Thinking that the only influence that Frida Kahlos disabilities had on her art was putting her in a lot of pain.

Not considering disability to be as important axis of oppression as race or gender.

Making fun of “frivolous white girls” when they are asking for a lot of disability accommodations for work or school.

Talking about how brave of a woman Anne Sullivan was while ignoring her disability and Helen Kellers own achievements.

Seeing transgender as being chiefly a medical issue and being shitty to trans women as a result in order to “protect mentally well cis girls spaces”.

Insisting that women don’t deserve to be babied because “we aren’t handicapped, we can do things on our own”.

Glossing over how race and disability intersect, because ableism isn’t seen as being important.

Glorifying the achievements of women who subject their disabled children to cures and treatments that the child doesn’t actually want.

Not making discussions of consent accessible to disabled young girls and boys.

Putting zero effort into bringing sex education to more special ed classrooms in the US and beyond.

Insulting old feminists by taunting them with images of canes, walkers, and being crotchety witches.

Disrespecting housewife jobs when it is often the only work disabled women can do consistently. Same with sex work.

Not including disabled women in body positive activities.

Medicalizing bi and asexuality.

Making fun of MRAs by calling them autistic, insane, or suggesting they have small penises.

A-spec people no longer need to worry about whether they are going to be put on dangerous medications to make their orientation more “normal.”

This has never fucking happened. Shut the fuck up oh my god!

A concept: aspec people stop making other vunerable aspec children worried and scared about things that never have happened and never will happen! Stop! S t o p!

This post is 1000000x more dangerous than any post that says “asexuals aren’t LGBT” like holy fuck! Aces aren’t just afraid to be themselves because of actual outside pressures anymore, they’re afraid because their community tells them “We could be treated like gay people next!!!” with no fucking evidence.

“Dangerous medication” you’ve got to be FUCKING kidding me. Stop outright lying to ace kids. Stop making ace kids terrified when theres nothing like this to be afraid of!

This post kids is refering to Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder. But this “asexual forced to take dangerous medication uwu” shit would never happen because HSDD refers to “chronic or ongoing lack of interest in sex, to the point that it causes her personal distress or problems in her relationships.”

-Since you all often say “But ace people can be interested in sex/ok in sexual relationships sometimes!” or “Asexual isn’t a synonym for low libido!” (which I disagree with but whatever) many ace people. Wouldn’t even be able to be catagorized in this disorder.

-YOU must go in and complain how a low sex drive is negatively affecting you. If it doesn’t bother you because you ID as ace, then they can’t Make you do fucking anything. If you don’t feel like this is a chronic problem hurting your ability to function in relationships or your ability to just fucking have fun, then nobody at the psychiatrist’s fucking cares and is going to try to help “fix” you.

-Obviously you must be an adult to be diagnosed, they’re not going to be concerned about a kid having this disorder because kids develop sexual desire at different rates. So any concern that a parent could force one to be treated for this disorder is. Factually incorrect.

-Worst case scenario if a parent dragged an ace kid to therapy, the therapist would just talk about anxiety with them and give them info about sexuality. They wouldn’t be able to diagnose or medicate them at all. Also, many psychology books and courses and even the DSM now actually include a tidbit about asexuality, so if a kid walked in like “My dad made me come here but really I just ID as asexual” your psychologist would be like “Ok, nothing to do here then! You aren’t in distress so I can’t do anything about this!”

-In fact, not only does this disorder not apply to kids, this disorder is usually diagnosed in older adults, especially post-menopausal women

-If for some reason an ace person who was insecure or didn’t know they even could ID as ace went to the therapist complaining about their low sex drive, medication wouldn’t just be handed to them like candy. Treatment for HSDD would be shit that honestly? Would benefit anyone. They would want to have joint therapy with you and a partner if you have one to assess any conflicts that may be residing there. They would see if you have any anxiety or self esteem issues that are causing a low sex drive. They would work on communication and non-sexual intimacy. Worst case scenario, this shit just wouldn’t work, but that literally isn’t the psychologist’s fault that you have this society given expectation of libido and that you haven’t heard of asexuality or don’t identify with it.

Oh and, my favorite part of the wikipedia article about HSDD? The part where they say they may give sexuality education because “sometimes problems occur because people have unrealistic perceptions about what normal sexuality is and are concerned that they do not compare well to that, and this is one reason why education can be important.” Gee man a lot of ace people could sure use that and realize its perfectly normal to not want to fuck people constantly.

This disorder is very broad, very common, very culturally and socially sensitive, and already criticized because the criteria for “normal” sex drive is so hard to actually pinpoint since the human sex drive is so diverse and even subject to change because of outside factors, age and mental and physical health (which again, a lot of ace people need to realize this too). If anything HSDD is a starting point, just saying “Ok you’re upset because you have a low sex drive, now we have a million different directions we could go because we need to find what social, cultural, psychological or physical cause there is for it.” And asexuality. Is absolutely one of those directions.

-And last, yes, they would test for biological issues and medicate them as necessary. But if you’re really just ace, there would be no medical issues and they would have nothing to medicate??? The most common medication is testosterone for low T men and HRT for post menopausal women. Obviously not going to happen to a healthy asexual person?? Like jfc.

So yeah, stop lying to asexuals and making kids fear being put on a lab table and injected with Dangerous Sex Medication when nothing remotely of the sort happens. GOD. DAMN.

not to mention that the specific medication being discussed (flibanserin) is 1) not currently covered by most insurance companies, 2) is prohibitively expensive without insurance (the cheapest is 824$ for a month’s supply at kroger), and 3) if it is covered by insurance, it will be in the highest copay tier for years to come (so 50-150$ a month, depending on your insurance plan).

aspec kids are not at risk of being put on this medication (it’s not indicated for anyone under the age of 18), nor is anyone who has not been diagnosed with hsdd, which specifically cannot be diagnosed if the person is asexual.

please stop fear mongering.

Girls actually love nice guys, it’s just that you’re not as nice a guy as you think you are.

I find this really hard to believe, as every time I’m interested in a girl she ends up with an asshole and I end up friendzoned or worse.

Imagine being the *exact* type of guy a post was aimed at, but somehow remaining blissfully unaware of that fact…

If you can’t enjoy being a friend, then you are not actually nice

When trans women are mocked and made into jokes in the media, I get very upset, and I am often told “Kay, you can’t go through life getting offended every time someone makes a joke.” And I sputter and object but they don’t hear me. So I want to be clear for once, about why the jokes make me angry.

I learned to hate myself for being transgender before I knew I was transgender. I laughed at the jokes in stand up comedy routines, and prime time sitcoms, and animated comedy shows, and in the movies, and in books, and in games, laughing at trans women for existing, about “men in dresses”, about people who “got their dicks chopped off”, and I learned to think that was worthy of ridicule.

And then a day came when I felt a pang of envy at what my female classmates were wearing and I repressed it, and felt guilty, and a day where I felt incomplete because I had no breasts and I repressed it and I felt disgusting
And a day when I realized the only images of romance that made me feel anything showed two women together and I repressed it and I felt like a monster
And a day when I realized I felt sick when I looked at myself in the mirror after every shower before work and couldn’t bear to look at my own face, and I hated myself.
And then there came a day when I hated myself so much, and I thought I could never understand why, and so I just wanted it all to end. And it was just a miracle that I swerved my car back into my lane in time.

And all of it started with a joke that I heard on TV, and then kept hearing from all the voices from the ether, over and over and over, worming an idea into my mind before I was old enough to realize I was absorbing it, the idea that a man in a dress is funny, and that changing your body parts makes you a freak, and that women who have penises instead of vaginas are liars and hurt men. And they’re still making these jokes. And somewhere out there right now, just like all those years ago, there is a little girl in a t-shirt and cargo shorts with buzzed off hair watching the TV, hearing that joke and absorbing it without knowing it, who will someday have to pry herself apart to tear it out of her head, just like I did.

That is, if she doesn’t kill herself first.

I know this is a really heavy post but if you read it and you appreciated it, I’d appreciate it in return if you reblogged it. This is really important to me and I want people to read it and understand it. Thank you.

anime:

why do anime girls from the 80s and 90s look so much better than anime girls today

Three factors: Color, personality, and realism.

First, color and shading.

image

vs.

image
image

The predominant style of the day in anime employs very crisp cell shading and eye-watering colors. Both female and male hair and eye coloration comes in any range of colors, from neon to pastel to white (although female characters most often display this). The typical color for skin in anime has gradually lightened to almost pure white over the years. Additionally, modern anime has a very specific, hard method of shading and highlighting that makes hair and skin look unnaturally shiny and often gross, lowering the realism value and throwing the texture of the skin into uncanny valley territory.

Secondly, anatomical proportions. Besides the shading, female character body and facial proportions have degraded so much that they are barely caricatures of human anatomy. Here are some examples of female anatomy in early anime:

image
image
image
image

and some in modern anime:

image
image
image
image

The biggest changes have been to the breast to waist proportion. For some reason, anime producers believe that an E-cup is the appropriate cup-size for an average 14 year old Japanese female. Bodies have also lost all of their depth (that come from an illusion of thickness necessary to two dimensional media) in favor of being skinny and flat (except for voluminous breasts, of course) and many normal, attractive parts of ladies (ribcages, stomach pooches, and natural folds) are simply smoothed over. Another noticeable change has been to the eyes and facial shape. Anime noses and mouths are apparently inversely proportional to eye shape, size, and distance apart. As the size of the eye increases, shape becomes more prominent, and distance towards the ears increases, the size of the nose, mouth, and chin decrease, contributing highly to the uncanny valley effect many modern any girls have.

Take these faces:

vs these

image

Thirdly, anime girls have lost much of their visible personality over the years due to moefication. This has happened to male characters also, although to a lesser extent. Anime girls are often not allowed to make cartoonish expressions (deemed unattractive) or generally change their expressions at all barring blush lines. In producers’ efforts to make the girls attractive to the audience in every frame, they sacrifice any personality that they might have. Anime girls look increasingly similar to one another, differentiated only by their hair style and eyes. Granted, there has always been a problem with female character same-face syndrome since the conception of anime (actually, in all drawn media) but as the number of female main characters in anime has grown, ironically, the problem has only increased.

image
image
image

Wow! Anime girls with the same hair color that you can actually tell apart!

image
image
image

And somehow, girls with all different colors that you can’t.

TLDR: modern anime girls look like washed out bobbleheads with no personality in a sad attempt to piggyback off of the success of older anime with more fleshed out (literally and figuratively) female characters

genderists:

blogs that make fun of “bad” art by random internet artists (as opposed to big studios, etc) are awful and malicious, and i say this as someone who used to be an avid follower of such blogs in my edgy tween days and as someone whose art was once featured on such a blog (one of the popular ones). i didn’t understand how badly it hurt until it happened to me because i was a thoughtless child, and it made me stop drawing altogether for almost a year. if it happened again today obviously it wouldn’t have that effect on me because I Am An Adult and i’ve learned how to handle even spiteful criticism, but to 13-year-old emotionally stunted me, it was devastating.

don’t make fun of a kid’s art, however Cringey you see it as. it’s inexcusable.

Hau’oli Lā Kamehameha!

Kamehameha Day was established by royal decree on December
22, 1871 by King Kamehameha V in order to honor the memory of his great
grandfather Kamehameha (Kalani Pai‘ea Wohi o Kaleikini Keali‘ikui Kamehameha
o ‘Iolani i Kaiwikapu kaui Ka Liholiho Kūnuiākea) (c.1758-1819), the chief who
had united the Hawaiian Islands and became the first king of Hawai‘i.

The first celebration of Kamehameha Day was held June 11, 1872 and continued
until a group of white businessmen and descendants of missionaries carried out the illegal overthrow of Queen Lili‘uokalani in 1893. In 1904, the
holiday was reinstated by Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole and it continues to
be celebrated on June 11 to this day.

To commemorate the day,

we are sharing images from our first edition copy of Voyagers by Herb Kawainui

Kāne

(1928-2011) depicting King Kamehameha.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin may seem a bit removed from the festivities of the day, but perhaps not as much as one would think. First, UWM Special Collections holds a considerable collection of Native American, First Nations, Inuit, and Hawaiian literature (of which Voyagers is a part). Secondly,

Kāne’s mother’s family were farmers from Wisconsin, and Kāne spent a good part of his childhood in the state. He also received his MFA not too far from here at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago/University of Chicago. He is among the first Native Hawaiian artists to achieve international repute.

Growing up, Kāne dreamed of
rebuilding a double-hulled sailing canoe similar to the ones his ancestors had
used to sail from Tahiti to Hawai‘i, but it had been over 600 years since these
canoes had last been seen. In the 1970s, Kāne founded the Polynesian Voyaging
Society where he and others combined their research and knowledge in order to make their dreams a reality. They were
successful in their efforts, ultimately building the sailing canoe Hōkūle‘a, of
which Kāne became the first captain in 1975. In 1976, with the help of Mau,
a traditional navigator from Satawal in Micronesia, Hōkūle‘a sailed to Tahiti
where they were greeted by over half of the island’s population at Pape‘ete
Harbor. Herb
Kawainui Kāne’s work was so important to the Hawaiian community that he was actually elected a Living Treasure of Hawai‘i in 1984. Kāne died on March 8, 2011, the 36th anniversary of the launch of the Hōkūle‘a. His place in history and that of King Kamehameha, however, remain forever in the memories of the Hawaiian people.

I hope one day that history looks back on ronald reagan as one of the 20th century’s most vile and disgusting serial killers

may i ask why

Remember when like 6 Americans had ebola and it was an international emergency, and Obama flew out to meet survivors?
Here is a list of things the United States government did in response:
-Increasing the number of Ebola testing labs throughout the U.S. that can quickly and safely screen a potential Ebola specimen
-Educating more than 150,000 health care workers on how to identify, isolate, diagnose, and care for patients under investigation for Ebola
-Developing countermeasures — including the first Ebola vaccine to progress to Phase 2 testing — to prevent and treat Ebola
-Converting at least 10 of the Ebola Treatment Centers into long-term Regional Ebola and Pandemic Treatment Centers for long-term readiness for years to come
-Helping state and local public health systems accelerate and improve their operational readiness and preparedness for Ebola or other infectious diseases

When the Reagan administration was faced with tens of thousands of gay men dying, they did nothing. They made jokes. They laughed. They caused an epidemic that killed 40 million people, because they hated gay men and thought we deserved to die.

There is so much more to it.  There is a myth perpetuated by Reaganites that he was an historically significant  President, in some positive sense.  If you are old enough to have voted in 1980, you probably know differently.  If you were born after 1980 you have been raised on this myth.  He sold Americans a fable about a Hollywood movie-like exceptional past and destiny, and led ordinary people around with portrayals of that mirage while his reactionary robber-baron friends set about dismantling 50 years of progressive advancements for working men and women, on their way to returning themselves to the position of unfettered economic domination they held between the Civil War and the Great Depression.  He was a union buster.   He gave us Scalia – need I say more?  He tried to give us Robert Bork (does anyone under 30 even know who he is?).  He lied about Iran/Contra.  He avoided dealing with AIDS.  He sealed the political sham-show between right wing capitalist kings and the evangelical thought-control snake-oil salesmen.  Americans don’t want to hear that they are ordinary citizens of the world, and they don’t want to hear that the aren’t anointed by some deity to lead the world to salvation.  They lapped it up, and they continue to do so.

I have to wonder how the response of a more competent presidency to the AIDS crisis might have changed even the global impact of the disease. Where might we be today? How many millions of people would be alive and not suffering? Yes, Reagan was historically significant—for fucking things up in a globally devastating way.

When you hear how he slashed Income taxes, he did on the Wealthy, but he increased the lowest tax rate from 10% to 15%.

His campaign was funded by Christian radicals, whose entire goal was to dismantle Roe vs. Wade and see American women relegated once more to back alleys and dirty knives.  He opened the door to religion in politics in a way the postwar McCarthyists never dreamed possible.  Now, 36 years after his election, maybe a third of American medical schools offer proper access to even first-trimester abortion training (in an era where that should mean a pill or vaginal suppository), and there are currently fewer doctors trained to perform late stage abortions for the entire US than there were pre-RvW (when such operations were only performed as a heroic measure).

And no one has even touched on his legacy of racial
hatred, deliberate destruction of black communities and establishing of COONTELPRO to destroy the lives of black panthers and black activists, his actual murder of black activists and more. He was actually a demon.

If you want to know how many lives could have been saved if the Reagan government had just fucking BUDGETED for AIDS research instead of telling AIDS researchers that they had to beg, borrow or steal any money for AIDS from other programs–then read And The Band Played On:

Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic, 20th-Anniversary Edition

by Randy Shilts. And be prepared to have your heart broken at the unadulterated and wildly irresponsible waste.of time and human lives.

Other shitty things Reagan did:

1) He almost tripled the National Debt. And you need to see the difference with zeroes:

When Reagan took office in 1980: $909,100,000  owed.(909.1 billion)

When Reagan left office in 1988:  $2,601,300,000,000 owed. (2.6 trillion)

2) He raised taxes on the middle class and the poor ELEVEN TIMES while in office

3) Unemployment soared after Reagan passed his tax cuts for the rich, and it took decades to get back down again.

4) He turned the U.S. into an illegal weapons dealer.

5) He funded terrorists, helping create the Taliban and Osama bin Laden. From NewsOne:

After Ronald Reagan was elected in 1981, U.S. funding of the mujahideen increased significantly and CIA Paramilitary Officers played a big role in training, arming and sometimes even leading mujahideen forces.

The CIA trained the mujahideen in many of the tactics Al Qaeda is known for today, such as car bombs, assassinations and other acts that would be considered terrorism today.

6) When his economic policies began wreaking havoc on the government, Reagan stole from Social Security–to the tune of 2.5 TRILLION–treating it for eight years as the private slush fund of himself and his rich friends

7) [T]he Reagan administration demonized opponents of apartheid, most notably the African National Congress, as dangerous and pro-communist. Reagan even vetoed a bill to impose sanctions on South Africa, only to be overruled by Congress.

They called him the Teflon president for a reason. All this shit–and none of it stuck to him. He got away clean every single time.

Reading up on Nelson Mandela I caught wind of that fact a few years back. The standing President of the US was more than a little ok with not condemning Apartheid even as a symbolic gesture.

That coupled with all of this and it speaks to an impossibly gross legacy. Of course the Neocons of the Republican set look at him as some sort of Conservative Jesus, so none of this would get actual traction with them. But email scandals are beyond the pale…

OH HELLS YES ANTI-REAGAN MASTERPOST

Also let’s not forget about how he created and/or dramatically enhanced the homeless problem in America by closing the California state psychiatric hospitals (except for the ones for the criminally insane) and tossing all the residents out into the street.

My great grandma literally wrote about she wished she could have assassinated reagan as she was laying on her death bed and had a copy of that letter sent to every member of our family.

Not to mention that because he drastically expanded the drug war, setting the stage for zero tolerance. Mass incarcerations increased from 50,000 in 1980 to over 400,000 in 1997. These policies also blocked syringe programs, which actually made HIV/AIDS much, much worse.

His deregulation of the S&L industry meant they no longer had to rely on residential mortgages for funding. Commercial real estate speculation ensued (sound familiar???) which eventually led to corruption, collapse of hundreds of thrift institutions and, you guessed it, a hundreds of billions of dollars taxpayer bailout.

Under his administration, nothing was done about racial discrimination in lending. Blatant redlining continued, and even though it was at this point illegal, nothing was done to prosecute or sanction banks.

Can we talk about how he started and perpetuated the myth of the welfare queen–the indolent black woman with an entitlement problem–which still affects the program and how people view it today. He used this rhetoric to get elected and used it to justify drastic cuts to urban funding, affecting everything from urban infastructure, to salaries, to urban schools and hospitals and clinics.

His cuts to low-income housing subsidies raised homeless from 600,000 to over 1.2 million in one year. Even the idea that homelessness is a choice stems from him.

But you know, he told Gorbechev to tear down this wall, so he’s a hero, right?

Yes. Yes. Yes.
