A-spec people no longer need to worry about whether they are going to be put on dangerous medications to make their orientation more “normal.”
This has never fucking happened. Shut the fuck up oh my god!
A concept: aspec people stop making other vunerable aspec children worried and scared about things that never have happened and never will happen! Stop! S t o p!
This post is 1000000x more dangerous than any post that says “asexuals aren’t LGBT” like holy fuck! Aces aren’t just afraid to be themselves because of actual outside pressures anymore, they’re afraid because their community tells them “We could be treated like gay people next!!!” with no fucking evidence.
“Dangerous medication” you’ve got to be FUCKING kidding me. Stop outright lying to ace kids. Stop making ace kids terrified when theres nothing like this to be afraid of!
This post kids is refering to Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder. But this “asexual forced to take dangerous medication uwu” shit would never happen because HSDD refers to “chronic or ongoing lack of interest in sex, to the point that it causes her personal distress or problems in her relationships.”
-Since you all often say “But ace people can be interested in sex/ok in sexual relationships sometimes!” or “Asexual isn’t a synonym for low libido!” (which I disagree with but whatever) many ace people. Wouldn’t even be able to be catagorized in this disorder.
-YOU must go in and complain how a low sex drive is negatively affecting you. If it doesn’t bother you because you ID as ace, then they can’t Make you do fucking anything. If you don’t feel like this is a chronic problem hurting your ability to function in relationships or your ability to just fucking have fun, then nobody at the psychiatrist’s fucking cares and is going to try to help “fix” you.
-Obviously you must be an adult to be diagnosed, they’re not going to be concerned about a kid having this disorder because kids develop sexual desire at different rates. So any concern that a parent could force one to be treated for this disorder is. Factually incorrect.
-Worst case scenario if a parent dragged an ace kid to therapy, the therapist would just talk about anxiety with them and give them info about sexuality. They wouldn’t be able to diagnose or medicate them at all. Also, many psychology books and courses and even the DSM now actually include a tidbit about asexuality, so if a kid walked in like “My dad made me come here but really I just ID as asexual” your psychologist would be like “Ok, nothing to do here then! You aren’t in distress so I can’t do anything about this!”
-In fact, not only does this disorder not apply to kids, this disorder is usually diagnosed in older adults, especially post-menopausal women
-If for some reason an ace person who was insecure or didn’t know they even could ID as ace went to the therapist complaining about their low sex drive, medication wouldn’t just be handed to them like candy. Treatment for HSDD would be shit that honestly? Would benefit anyone. They would want to have joint therapy with you and a partner if you have one to assess any conflicts that may be residing there. They would see if you have any anxiety or self esteem issues that are causing a low sex drive. They would work on communication and non-sexual intimacy. Worst case scenario, this shit just wouldn’t work, but that literally isn’t the psychologist’s fault that you have this society given expectation of libido and that you haven’t heard of asexuality or don’t identify with it.
Oh and, my favorite part of the wikipedia article about HSDD? The part where they say they may give sexuality education because “sometimes problems occur because people have unrealistic perceptions about what normal sexuality is and are concerned that they do not compare well to that, and this is one reason why education can be important.” Gee man a lot of ace people could sure use that and realize its perfectly normal to not want to fuck people constantly.
This disorder is very broad, very common, very culturally and socially sensitive, and already criticized because the criteria for “normal” sex drive is so hard to actually pinpoint since the human sex drive is so diverse and even subject to change because of outside factors, age and mental and physical health (which again, a lot of ace people need to realize this too). If anything HSDD is a starting point, just saying “Ok you’re upset because you have a low sex drive, now we have a million different directions we could go because we need to find what social, cultural, psychological or physical cause there is for it.” And asexuality. Is absolutely one of those directions.
-And last, yes, they would test for biological issues and medicate them as necessary. But if you’re really just ace, there would be no medical issues and they would have nothing to medicate??? The most common medication is testosterone for low T men and HRT for post menopausal women. Obviously not going to happen to a healthy asexual person?? Like jfc.
So yeah, stop lying to asexuals and making kids fear being put on a lab table and injected with Dangerous Sex Medication when nothing remotely of the sort happens. GOD. DAMN.
not to mention that the specific medication being discussed (flibanserin) is 1) not currently covered by most insurance companies, 2) is prohibitively expensive without insurance (the cheapest is 824$ for a month’s supply at kroger), and 3) if it is covered by insurance, it will be in the highest copay tier for years to come (so 50-150$ a month, depending on your insurance plan).
aspec kids are not at risk of being put on this medication (it’s not indicated for anyone under the age of 18), nor is anyone who has not been diagnosed with hsdd, which specifically cannot be diagnosed if the person is asexual.
please stop fear mongering.
