What Would A Mediocre White Man Do? (new mantra to live by!)

this is SO REAL both the specific case and the broad case in the specific case: if you actually met 100% of the requirements they couldn’t afford you I tell this to every woman I talk to job hunting about APPLY ANYWAY THE MEDIOCRE WHITE MEN ARE DOING IT (via @galwednesday)

“if you actually met 100% of the requirements they couldn’t afford you”

I really needed to hear this. I had never thought of it this way. This literally never occurred to me, I’ve just spent my whole adult life thinking I was underqualified for everything. Thinking I’m not good enough for anything because the “minimum requirements” are so high.

I need specifics. I wanna know what I can get away with. I wanna know what they really mean by “minimum.” I wanna know how much I’m actually worth.

As someone who worked in hr, this is true.

True to the point that if someone was extremely unqualified, but because of timing we were desperate, we’d bend rules to get them hired. And the only people taking advantage of this were guys.

if you actually met 100% of the requirements they couldn’t afford you

this made so much click in my head. because this was literally it–spend half the time being unqualified for everything and just not applying. and the rest of the time being qualified and not getting hired. because ahahaha fuck you, you’re too expensive now/we’re too worried you’ll jump ship and leave us because of how qualified you are! guess we’ll just hire this shitty dude to do it !? ?

I debated posting this here but WWAMWMD? He’d post it. #girlgogetyours

It’s way more than “if you actually met 100% of the requirements they couldn’t afford you”

The reason they couldn’t afford you is that if you meet 100% of the requirements, you’re ready for the next position up.

Career strategy 101: The most valuable employees are always learning. Every company wants employees who won’t stagnate, i.e. sit in one role doing the same thing ever year and continue getting annual raises. A company wants to hire you for one thing at one salary, and then move you up through higher positions over the years, i.e. they keep getting new benefits for the additional money they’re spending on you.

A good company will offer you development opportunities, either within your role or in addition to it. So when the company interviews you, they want to see that you can learn what they need, and you want to see that they can teach you new skills. Companies know that the best applicants are interviewing them in return and that if they don’t offer development, they will lose those applicants to better jobs.

Companies structure positions this way intentionally and they assume you know it.

So not only should you apply to jobs you aren’t 100% qualified for, you can use 100% qualification as an indicator that you’re overqualified and should look for the next job up.

This started funny but became really important to know.

how lucky do two people have to be in order to fall for each other at exactly the right time in exactly the right way

this is how i used to feel when i spent months building someone up in my mind and developing an overwhelming crush, and my feelings were so huge and it felt like the probability of that person having built me up in the same way was impossible just based on numbers. but it turns out that a relationship is something that people build together, not the random chance that you’ll point your obsessive crush beacon at someone at the exact same time that they point theirs at you.

Pro tip: Half & half lasts longer than milk, and cream lasts longer than half & half. I try to keep a little tiny carton in the fridge because you never know when you’ll need to add a splash of [dairy product] into a sauce or a pasta, but it’s not worth getting a whole jug of milk and watching it go bad.

Pro tip #2: You can make mashed potatoes. Yes, you in the corner who doesn’t cook much. It’s easy, it’s delicious, and it’s very very satisfying to do.

(I’m saying this because growing up, making “real” mashed potatoes was a Big Deal. We used the flake kind out of the box. I was so amazed when a previous roommate showed me… it’s really no harder to just make them for realsies.)

Here’s the whole deal.

You get a quantity of potatoes. If it’s just you, get two medium-sized brown ones, or three red ones (which are smaller.) If it’s you and a friend, three browns or five reds. And so on.

Peel ‘em or just wash ‘em really good (with water! not soap!!!) if you like skins in your mash. Then cut them into chunks. Size doesn’t matter (wink wink nudge nudge), it just helps them cook faster and be in your mouth sooner. I normally end up with cubes about an inch, two inches in size.

Put them in a saucepot and pour enough water in so that it covers the tops of all the potatoes. Heat over medium, medium-high, whatever, until the potatoes feel soft when you stick a fork in them.

Oh my stars and garters, are you almost done! You are!

Take the pot off the stove, drain the water out, and… drumroll… MASH THE POTATOES. With a fork or a wooden spoon or a fancy masher if you have one. Splash some of the aforementioned Emergency Dairy Product in there and two tablespoons of butter to help get things moving.

Too dry? A second splash of dairy. Too bland? More butter, salt, whatever. Your potatoes are cooked, they are soft and crumbly, and now you just make them taste like what you want. Cheese? Chives? Garlic? Have fun.

And oh my gosh, look at that, you have fresh homemade mashed potatoes and all you did was throw cut up potatoes in a pot, boil them, and add yums.

It’s a good feeling for your brain and also your tummy to make things to feed yourself.

The way I see it, America will eventually have the choice between forgiving student debt or facing the massive destabilization caused by an entire generation being unable to build any wealth.

By destabilization I mean that the millennial generation will eventually become aware of the fact that they will be enslaved by their student debt for most of, if not their entire lives.

Many in this generation still had parents that were able to save and contribute financially to their children’s college education, but that’s also going to be a thing of the past when everyone has their own debt burden to carry well into adulthood – meaning the problem will become unimaginably worse for the next generation.

Once people realize this, you’ve got a social powder keg unheard of since the social question poised by the industrial revolution.

The entire student loan system is little more than a scheme meant to extract every last bit of present and future wealth from society’s youngest members, and the longer it continues, the uglier its inevitable end is going to be.

and so many millennials are choosing not to get married, or have kids because of all the debts they owe.

its having much more severe consequences than people want to admit.

Oh, it’s even worse than you think, because many millennials are making the conscious decision to default. There are no real legal penalties for defaulting (debtors prison, for now, is still not a thing). You’ll get letters threatening to sue you and garnish your wages, but they are almost always empty threats. It doesn’t happen. Your credit will be destroyed, but it is technically possible to live life without anything requiring a good credit score. These are the people who will never own property, never take out a car loan, or make any other large purchases requiring financing, but they were already so strapped paying student loan payments, they couldn’t afford those things anyway!

So where does it get “even worse”? The only real penalty for not paying those loans is that the government can, and will, withhold your social security when you reach retirement age. So 25 years from now we’re going to have a generation full of retirement age people who will not be able to retire for one of two big reasons: 1) they spent their youth living on the fringe paying massive student loans debts, and therefore own nothing to keep them afloat (like a paid off house) and they have to keep working to pay rent and survive, or 2) they chose to default so they could actually live some semblance of a life, but now they can’t stop working because no Social Security checks are coming.

Either way, it’s a massive disaster that the government WILL end up holding the bag for. They will either forgive the loans, or they will have to take the weight of all those old millennials dropping into the safety net. They will also have to deal with the high umemployment of generation Z, which will be a direct result of the Millennials not leaving the workforce to make room for them.

“they” (1 word) is shorter than “he or she” (3 words)

“they” is more inclusive than “he/she”

“themself” flows more naturally than “him or herself

“they” is less clunky than “(s)he”

it’s time to replace the awkward “she or he

“hey can you go ask they what does they want for dinner, and when is they coming over to watch movies with they?”

“Hey, can you go ask them what they want for dinner, and when they’re coming over to watch movies?”

Step one is learning how to talk like a human person.

Friendly reminder:

“I shouldn’t like to punish anyone, even if they’d done me wrong.” —George Eliot, The Mill on the Floss (1860)

“A person can’t help their birth.” —William Thackeray, Vanity Fair (1848)

“But to expose the former faults of any person, without knowing what their present feelings were, seemed unjustifiable.” —Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice (1813)

“Every Fool can do as they’re bid.” —Jonathan Swift, Polite Conversation (1738)

“So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.” —King James Bible, Matthew 18:35 (transl. 1611)

“God send every one their heart’s desire!” —William Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing (~1600)

“Now this king did keepe a great house, that euerie body might come and take their meat freely.” —Sir Philip Sidney, the Arcadia (1580)

“If … a psalme scape any person, or a lesson, or els yt they omyt one verse or twayne…” —William Bonde, The Pylgrimage of Perfection (1526)

“And whoso fyndeth hym out of swich blame, / They wol come up and offre a Goddés name” —Geoffrey Chaucer, The Pardoner’s Tale (~1380)

“þan hastely hiȝed eche wiȝt on hors & on fote, / huntyng wiȝt houndes alle heie wodes, / til þei neyȝþed so neiȝh to nymphe þe soþe [Then hastily hied each person on horse and on foot / hunting with hounds all the high woods / ‘til they came so near, to tell the truth]” —William and the Werwolf (transl. ~1350-1375)

“Bath ware made sun and mon, / Aiþer wit þer ouen light [Both were made sun and moon / Either with their own light]” —Cursor Mundi (~1325)

We’ve been using they/them/their pronouns to indicate a person with unspecified gender for a long ass fucking time. The only reason it’s become a big issue lately is because it can be used as a semi-respectful term for trans and non-binary folks and we can’t have that can we

These fucks are literally trying to change our language to hurt trans/nb folks, and claiming that’s just the way its always been

how did that person forget the word ‘them’

MUSLIMS ARE GETTING PUT IN CONCENTRATION CAMPS IN CHINA

MUSLIMS ARE GETTING PUT IN CONCENTRATION CAMPS IN CHINA

MUSLIMS ARE GETTING PUT IN CONCENTRATION CAMPS IN CHINA

MUSLIMS ARE GETTING PUT IN CONCENTRATION CAMPS IN CHINA

Links to articles about this in The Independent and The Washington Post.

“Muslims forced to drink alcohol and eat pork in China’s ‘re-education’ camps, former inmate claims
‘The psychological pressure is enormous when you have to criticise yourself, denounce your thinking,’ says detainee”

these are from may 2018.

The majority being discriminated against are called Uyghurs. Khazaks, Uzbeks, and Tajiks are also being ostracized. They are Turkic minorities. They are people. And the world is unaware.

There is an estimated one million people in these so called “re-education camps”. Uyghur people are being forced to assimilate into Chinese culture through marriage. Uyghur children are forced to learn Mandarin and Uyghurqi, the language, is prohibited to be taught in schools. There is a lot of Uyghur unemployment due to ethnic discrimination. Uyghur people are routinely, unjustly imprisoned, and many die. An elderly Uyghur poet was imprisoned. An Uyghur couple my family knows was beaten, and the wife suffered a miscarriage. These are just a few examples of discrimination.

Rebiya Kadeer is fighting for our voices to be heard. She is one of many who was unjustly imprisoned, due to her political activism. She was put on death row and was told to keep quiet or her family would be killed. More than 30 of her relatives have been unjustly detained in the concentration camps. Read her book (Dragon Fighter).

My culture is forcefully being erased. My people are dying. Who is listening? Who can help us?

This is ethnic cleansing.

This is the coming of the second Holocaust. I know that that word cannot be used lightly, which is why I am using it. I hope you all understand the severity of the situation.

Please spread the word. Be aware of this. Tell your friends, your family, anyone who will listen.

Uyghurs can’t reach out for help, but you can on their behalf.

Please.

Better Images from Tumblr

A friendly commenter @nawba taught me how to find big uncompressed images on Tumblr. Thank you @nawba!! This might not work forever or for everyone but it works well for me!

  1. Right click the image to get the image URL.
  2. Replace “https://78.media.tumblr.com/” at the beginning of the URL with “https://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/”
  3. Replace “_1280.jpg” at the end of the URL with “_raw.jpg”

This should give you an image that’s probably bigger and definitely clearer (less compressed) than what you see on the Tumblr dashboard or on the usual web page.

You can try it yourself with this drawing:

I dislike how Tumblr compresses my images. At least now I can find good copies of my images via my own blog, if not on my own blog. Also it helps when looking for cool wallpaper or background images.

(If I explained this wrong or I’m missing something, please tell me, so I can amend this post.)

Cool trick!
