I mentioned in that earlier post I made about Yuuri being a unique protagonist in a field of teenage prodigy protagonists in anime, and then just hours later we get an interview where Sayo went on about how people she took the project to wanted her to make it about teens, make it about a high school club, etc., but she wouldn’t do that even though those shows have been successful.
She stuck to her vision that Yuuri Katsuki is the protagonist this show needs; that it needed this atypical unique approach not of a an athlete just getting started on a school level, or a teen prodigy on the highest level (which there are also plenty anime of), but an adult hero who has been at it for a while but is longing to achieve the success they’ve been aiming for (who, despite their immense talent, has been hindered along the way by one of the most realistic antagonists of all; their own mind). And it’s part of what makes the show great, and no it wouldn’t be near what it is if they’d gone with another protagonist.
