“why do we even need ao3/ why won’t they censor content i don’t like/ what’s that money going towards”

it’s going towards not arbitrarily deleting all your fucking blogs overnight because yahoo had a shareholders meeting, that’s what the fuck it’s going towards. if you don’t own it, they can yank the cord whenever they feel like it, for whatever reason, using whatever wobbly catch-all algorithm they want, and that is exactly what the fuck we’ve been telling you. “wellll i’m not a porn blog, it’s not going to affect me,” oh worm?? you sure?? this website is suddenly gonna be capable of censoring posted content with surgical precision? give ao3 ten bucks immediately and get real

also: time to go subscribe to any fic writers you like on ao3, in case their tumblrs get deleted and you lose track of them!

Literally any pornorgraphic art and writing is still allowed. Why the fuck is everyone freaking out. Chill.

You have that much faith in tumblr? Tumblr’s not even that good at enforcing its own terms now.

Besides, “think of the children”/“get rid of the porn” has historically been used as an excuse to get rid of LGBTQ artists and content.

Remember Strikethrough?

I just checked the Tom Hardy tag to take a break from reblogging all this shit and already literally 3 different Venom gifsets- which only featured Eddie Brock’s face, have been marked as N/S/F/W because the sensors picked what it deemed a large patch of exposed skin and determined it must be p*rn

also, anybody got that “I didn’t think the lion would eat my face said the woman who voted for the lion face eating party” cause, uh, that’ll be relevant in no time

Pictures of full clothed people cuddling, gifsets with literally no people in it are being flagged, the algorythm is THAT BAD.

I think the real problem here is that big media corporations seem to believe that social media userbases are fungible, and persist in acting on this belief no matter how many times it’s demonstrated to be wrong.

There’s a specific pattern of events that plays out over and over (and over) again, and it looks something like this:

1. Social media platform becomes popular

2. Social media platform is purchased by big media corporation in order to gain access to it large user base

3. Big media corporation realises that social media platform’s demographics are not the demographics they want to sell things to.

4. Big media corporation institutes measures to drive away “undesirable” users, apparently in the honest belief that the outgoing users will automatically be replaced by an equal number of new, more demographically desirable users

5. This does not, in fact, occur

6. Social media platform crashes and burns

You’d think that, by the sheer law of averages, at least one person who’s capable of learning from experience would become involved in this whole process at some point.

In response to the NSFW ban being enacted by Tumblr Staff, on December 17th 2018 I propose that we all log off of our Tumblr accounts for 24 hours.

The lack of respect and communication between staff and users is stark. Users have been begging staff to delete the porn bot outbreak, which has plagued the website for well over a year. The porn bots oftentimes send people asks and messages, trying to get them to go to a website full of viruses. They also spam advertisements on others posts.

Users have also begged that Tumblr ban neo-nazis, child porn, and pedophiles, all which run rampant on the site. The site/app got so bad that it was taken off the app store.

However, instead of answering the users, Tumblr has instead taken the liberty to ban all NSFW content, regardless of age. But users have already run into issues of their SFW content being marked as sensitive and being flagged as NSFW, not allowing them to share their work.

Not only does this discriminate again content creators, but it also discriminates against sex workers. Disgustingly, the ban will be enacted on December 17 which is also International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.

This ban is disgusting, and while I (and plenty of others) welcome porn bots and child porn being banned, the Tumblr filtration system is broken. It tags artistic work’s nipples as NSFW (when it is art), it tags SFW art as NSFW (when it is not), and does not stop the porn bots, neo-nazis and dozens of other issues.

This ban is discriminatory. This ban is ineffective. This ban is unacceptable.

To protest, log off of your Tumblr account for the entirety of November 17th. Log off at 12 am EST or 9PM PST and stay off for 24 hours. Don’t post. Don’t log on. Don’t even visit the website. Don’t give them that sweet ad revenue.

Tumblr’s stock has already taken a hard hit. Let’s make it tank. Maybe then they will listen to the users.

Reblog to signal boost! We must force change.

Oh, I will log off for much longer than that.

Do you think you are gonna post your art in general somewhere else cause of the ban?

I feel like I am missing out on something, since I have close to no idea on what’s going on? People are kinda mentioning tumblr everywhere, but I am still not sure what’s that about.

As I mentioned a few times, I am not as active on tumblr as I am on my other social medias! I post a lot on instagram, as well as twitter:3

So in case of emergencies you can always find me there<3
